December 2022

Dear neighbours,

We hope you are doing well. We have a lot to share with you this month!

Project Update: Events

Carols on the Green

Save the date! This year Christmas Light Switch On and Carols On The Green will take place on Wednesday December 7th from 4.30-7pm.

There will be performances from the children of St Jude & St Paul’s Primary School, Newington Green Primary School and Rotherfield Primary School.

There will be mince pies and mulled wine on sale at Lizzy’s On The Green and profits from the mulled wine will go toward the Newington Green Food Hub.

Project Update: Food Justice

Since we switched to membership model the NG Food Hub has signed up over 90 households and demand is increasing weekly. We do not want to reduce our catchment area further but we need more funds to keep growing.

Some of you have received a winter fuel payment that you are lucky enough to not need. Please can we encourage you to donate it to the food project  so we can support more people.

We have contacted those of you who have been donating to us through Bankuet to ask that you donate to us directly now that we have found better ways of buying healthier, culturally appropriate food and are able to take full advantage of Gift Aid.

If you are able to please set up a standing order to us that is the best way to support the project. Our bank deatils:

Newington Green Action Group
CAF Bank
Sort Code 40 52 40
A/c No: 00014613

Please email our Treasurer at accounts@newingtongreen.org if you have any queries.

You can also make a one off or recurring donation through the website here.

As ever, if you know anyone locally who needs some support please tell them to come to St Jude and St Paul’s Church any Tuesday between 12-3pm.

Xmas lunch help

On Tuesday 20th December we are planning a special Xmas celebration at the Newington Green Food Hub. It will also be a thank you to all of our volunteers including those from St Jude and St Paul’s Church and PTA.

We are looking for some chefs and servers for the day (to give the regular volunteers a break). Please email food@newingtongreen.org if you can help out.

Local news

Goodbye Acoustic, Hello No.60

Some of you will have noticed that Acoustic Brasserie has changed its name. Adil who ran Acoustic for over a decade has sold the business. The new owner assures us that he is committed to the community and that the menu will continue largely unchanged.

We will all miss Adil. He was an active member of the community and was especilly helpful with the public realm project at the end of Ferntower Road.  Acoustic in Stokey remians open, you can read about it here.

Another 5 years for Lizzy’s

Lizzy’s On The Green have won the tender to continue to trade in Newington Green for a further 5 years.

Wallace Road business opportunity

Following the retirement of the licensee who has run the tea hut on Wallace Road Islington Council is advertising for concession outside Canonbury Station. Please forward the details below to anyone who might be interested.

Richard Adams plaque

Last Friday an Islington Local History plaque was put up on the house in St Paul's Place where Richard Adams, the author of Watership Down, used to live. It was followed by an event at The Mildmay Club.

The children from Newington Green Primary School played a big role in the celebrations. The event was covered extensively in national and local media. You can see the ITV package here and the Channel 5 one here

Project update: Heritage

Richard Price

Some of you will have noticed the new STEWY stencil of Price that appeared on the side of the kiosk in Newington Green Park last month.

Next year is the 300th anniversary of Price’s birth and there will be an exciting project to mark the occasion. If you are interested in being involved please email info@newingtongreen.org .

In solidarity,

Team NGAG
